New dynamics, mobile individuals and diverse responses

Dear UEHP members,

With great sadness and sorrow, we are announcing that on 24th January, 2019, Professor Stayko Spiridonov left us very suddenly and forever. There is no one who touches him and has not experienced the charisma, the enthusiasm and the desire for life he wore. A man for whom family, work and friendship meant everything left us. No one was able to motivate people in the team around him, as he did. He had grown up the time he lived in, and he was so high that no one ever thought about growing up with him.

His great heart, open to all humans and all the pains, does not endure.....

We lost a friend, a doctor, a public figure, an indisputable leader, a professional, a lecturer and an expert strongly committed to the goals and problems of healthcare in Bulgaria and Europe....

Prof. Dr. Stayko Spiridonov was born on 14 June 1951 in Pazardzhik, Bulgaria, where he grew up and worked.

His educational and then scientific activity started at the Medical Academy in Sofia, where he graduated in General Surgery. Following are specializations in plastic-aesthetic and reconstructive surgery in France, Spain and Argentina, a Master's degree in Health Management and Health Policy, a Master's degree in organization and tactics of the medical service. He has two academic titles - Associate Professor from 2011 and Professor from 2018. He has written a number of specialized publications, scientific papers, congresses, symposia and conferences. He was a lecturer at the Faculty of Public Health at the Medical University of Sofia.

In his professional career, Prof. Spiridonov works as a surgeon at the state hospital in Pazardzhik. In the period 1983-1988 he was head of the Emergency Medical Care Unit in the Pazardzhik region. From 1988 to 1991 he occupies the position Deputy Chief Medical Officer at the state hospital in Pazardzhik. In 1991 Prof. Stayko Spiridonov is a founder of the first medical established with private property in Bulgaria and Eastern Europe. Under his leadership, Higia Hospital has been successfully developing and modernizing for 28 years, applying the best European practices in medicine.

In 1999, after the devastating earthquake in Turkey, on his own initiative, a field hospital was organized in one of the most affected cities - Adapazari.

Prof. Spiridonov was the initiator and importer of a draft law on amendments to the Law on Professional Organizations as well as on a number of reforms in the Bulgarian healthcare system. Despite all the leadership positions he has occupied, he has always remained faithful to his vocation to be a physician, to help people. Prof. Spiridonov is a Chairman of the National Association for Health Policy and Management, Chairman of the National Association of Private Hospitals in Bulgaria, Member of the European Union of Private Hospitals, Honorary Chairman of the Bulgarian Hospital Association, Founder of the Association of Private Entrepreneurs and Employers in Pazardzhik. He is a multiple award winner and awards related to his noble profession and leadership qualities.

HEARTFELT TRIBUTE TO HIS BRIGHT MEMORY!
